{"id":164,"date":"2018-04-12T10:17:49","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T10:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.techandtrain.in\/blog\/?p=164"},"modified":"2025-10-22T14:55:34","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T09:25:34","slug":"what-should-managers-be-doing-in-it-industry-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.techandtrain.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/what-should-managers-be-doing-in-it-industry-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"What should managers be doing in IT industry &#8211; Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are many things that senior engineers and managers do well in IT industry among which few are listed below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Architecture<\/li>\n<li>Presales<\/li>\n<li>Solutioning<\/li>\n<li>Debugging and solving problems<\/li>\n<li>Exploring new technologies around the areas they have learned in the past<\/li>\n<li>Analysis of scenarios<\/li>\n<li>Product Management<\/li>\n<li>Project Management<\/li>\n<li>Setting up processes<\/li>\n<li>Team Management<\/li>\n<li>Digital Marketing &amp; Sales<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some things that they don&#8217;t do well:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Put in long hours in support &amp; maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Explore completely new areas in which they have not worked before<\/li>\n<li>Testing<\/li>\n<li>Programming<\/li>\n<li>Learning new trends and technologies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are born in 1980s or before, you would have become a manager in IT industry by now. In this case, at times many stop updating themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some pointers on how to update oneself and rebuild your career:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instead of only reading about domains and technologies, experiment with software practically<\/li>\n<li>Setup a small consulting \/ teaching \/ area specific business where you have passion, create a website, host some parts on traditional shared servers and some on AWS \/ Azure \/ etc.<\/li>\n<li>Do some freelancing on the sides<\/li>\n<li>Meet startups, founders, discuss their problems and offer free consulting hours to solve their issues<\/li>\n<li>Network with local young IT professionals and see the latest apps and trends<\/li>\n<li>Attend various MeetUps in your area<\/li>\n<li>Pick up a new programming language and product<\/li>\n<li>Try out Linux and other open source projects from SourceForge, GitHub, Apache Foundation, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Take up courses from Coursera, edX, Udemy and similar portals<\/li>\n<li>Go for further education in part time, online or distance mode &#8211; courses like MBA, MCA, Executive MBA, MSc, MS online from Universities across the world, MTech, PhD, etc. which can be done with your job<\/li>\n<li>Follow industry professionals in upcoming technologies and domains on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook or other social media platforms to get updates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unless one
